<\/a>Journalists who were recently released from the KCK Media case organized a press conference at \u00d6zg\u00fcr G\u00fcndem newspaper. Y\u00fcksel Gen\u00e7 read the press statement on behalf of the journalists. \u201cJust like the decision of our arrest, the decision of our release is political,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\u201cAs the arrested journalists of this witch hunt started against the Kurdish Freedom Movement on April 14th, 2009, we are released after 29 months\u201d said Gen\u00e7. He expressed that they were kept in prison unjustly for 2 years and they\u2019re happy now because they\u2019re free but they feel sourness because they left their political prisoner friends in prison.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnti democratic system doesn\u2019t change\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Gen\u00e7 remarked that there are sick prisoners in prison that must be released immediately.<\/p>\n \u201cThe government made \u2018cosmetic\u2019 arrangements in law because they wanted to get rid of the criticisms from its own public and the international public opinion according to the pressures on freedom of press right before the Presidential elections.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThese arrangements didn\u2019t create any changes in the core of anti-democratic law system. These arrangements don\u2019t prevent media employees from getting arrested and receiving sentences, it prevents them to receive lifetime imprisonments.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cNumber of jailed journalists is not a measure\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Gen\u00e7 mentioned that the freedom of press in Turkey cannot be measured with the number of imprisoned journalists and said \u201cPermissive decisions of the government, the judiciary under the supervision of the government and the newspaper bosses affected by government\u2019s economic pressures controlling whether the media employees are going to be free or arrested shows the miserable situation of freedom of press\u201d.<\/p>\n Gen\u00e7 stated that the freedom of press is a part of the ongoing peace process and said \u201cJust like the \u2018\u0130mral\u0131 process\u2019 doesn\u2019t have any legal basis, media employees\u2019 usage of freedom of expression doesn\u2019t have a legal basis\u201d.
