Photograph: Jahangir Youssif\/Meydan TV<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gulnara Suleymanova and her family of five live in a wagon behind Baku\u2019s prestigious new sports stadium, built especially for next month\u2019s European Games.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOn your way here, you might have seen piles of sand, that\u2019s where my husband sieves when there\u2019s no work,\u201d says Suleymanova, who is a cleaner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The family\u2019s income is about 300 Azerbaijani manats (\u00a3184) a month \u2013 which is barely enough for food, she says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Theirs is the story of a family subsisting alongside the ambitious venues constructed for Azerbaijan\u2019s inaugural Games and generously funded by the state oil company Socar. The authoritarian president, Ilham Aliyev, a keen enthusiast of the Games, is said to have invested a total of <a title=\"Azerbaijani organisers of European Games in Baku to pay athletes\u2019 bill \" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2015\/feb\/26\/azerbaijan-european-games-baku-athletes-bill-human-rights\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a36.5bn in sports venues and infrastructure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Organisers are also paying the travel and accommodation expenses of all 6,000 athletes competing in the event, a <a title=\"Azerbaijani organisers of European Games in Baku to pay athletes\u2019 bill \" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2015\/feb\/26\/azerbaijan-european-games-baku-athletes-bill-human-rights\" target=\"_blank\">move condemned by human rights groups<\/a> as an attempt to whitewash the country\u2019s poor human rights record and endemic corruption.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last week the government extended the detention of award-winning investigative journalist who had written articles <a title=\"Azerbaijan extends journalist's detention ahead of European Games \" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/may\/15\/azerbaijan-european-games-khadija-ismayilova\" target=\"_blank\">exposing state corruption<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Life in the oilfields<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For Suleymanova, the glaring disparity between the luxury stadiums and her family\u2019s daily struggle raises important questions about who the Games will actually benefit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt\u2019s cold in the winter, and it doesn\u2019t matter how much you use the heater,\u201d Suleymanova says. \u201cIn the summer, it\u2019s terribly hot. We take water from the neighbour. Water, gas, electricity are all one big problem. When it comes to living, you have to experience it yourself in order to understand. It\u2019s hard to describe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JIVpeWdtLuI\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After 10 years of renting, the family settled in their oilfield wagon behind the stadium. The smell of oil is ubiquitous, but it\u2019s not their biggest problem: they are hungry, thirsty and the health of two of her children is deteriorating.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Suleymanova\u2019s son has a hearing impairment and her daughter has problems with her vision. Each time she sees the stadium she wonders how many children could access medical treatment with the money it cost to build.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOnly 100th of those four billion manats would be enough to treat my child,\u201d she says. \u201cBut they didn\u2019t give it to me. Wherever I went, I got nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u2018Everything I have is inside this room\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Suleymanova\u2019s family live in one dim, narrow, room scant with furniture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI don\u2019t have a table. I can\u2019t offer you a chair, because I don\u2019t have it,\u201d Suleymanova says. \u201cThis is both my living room and bedroom. I don\u2019t have proper curtains. If you ask for a bathroom, we don\u2019t have it either, we shower at the neighbours\u2019 place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI don\u2019t have a kitchen. Everything I have is inside this room,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Her requests for government help have fallen on deaf ears. She applied for targeted social assistance but didn\u2019t qualify. \u201cThey told me your husband must have a job in a state-funded entity. You need to bring a paper proving that.
