Just five days later, the Turkish government inked a contract to hire a team of prominent lobbyists to add to its already formidable army of influence-peddlers in Washington.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a title=\"Turkey Squire Patton Boggs contract\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fara.gov\/docs\/2165-Exhibit-AB-20150810-64.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">contract<\/a>, revealed Wednesday in a filing with the Justice Department, shows that the law and lobbying firm Squire Patton Boggs was retained on July 29 on a $32,000 a month retainer \u2014 as a subcontractor to Gephardt Government Affairs, acting for Turkey on its own 10-month, $1.7 million contract.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1617\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1617\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/covcasbulletin-info.hhd.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Covcas-demonstration-against-attacks-on-Kurds.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1617\" src=\"https:\/\/covcasbulletin-info.hhd.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Covcas-demonstration-against-attacks-on-Kurds-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"A demonstration denouncing a police operation against Kurdish militants in Istanbul. It is among the highest grossing firms inside the Beltway, with a roster of former senior government officials and lawmakers. Individuals from the firm are now helping to fundraise for <a title=\"Lobbyists bundle nearly a quarter million dollars for Jeb Bush\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/powerpost\/wp\/2015\/07\/15\/lobbyists-bundle-nearly-a-quarter-million-dollars-for-jeb-bush\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeb Bush<\/a> and are among the <a title=\"Hilary Clinton top contributors\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/politicians\/contrib.php?cycle=Career&amp;cid=n00000019\" target=\"_blank\">top 20 donors<\/a> to Hillary Clinton over the course of her political career.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As we <a title=\"Turkey\u2019s Political Influence Felt as Washington Turns Its Back on Kurds Fighting ISIS\" href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2015\/07\/29\/turkeys-american-lobbyists-work-defeat-military-aid-isis\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> last month, Turkey has quietly used its hired political muscle to influence the U.S. war on the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, including a lobbying effort aimed at preventing U.S. military aide to Peshmerga forces, which have collaborated with other Kurdish militas against ISIS. Though American military commanders view the Kurdish fighters associated with the Kurdistan Worker\u2019s Party, or PKK, as the most effective forces against ISIS, Turkey\u2019s political leaders view PKK and other Kurdish militias as an existential threat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Turkey\u2019s decision to allow American military planes to use two air bases there led American officials to express support for Turkey, even as it ramped up its bombing campaign against Kurdish forces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The lobbying registration documents show that Turkey will now be assisted by a Squire Patton Boggs team that includes former Sens. Trent Lott and John Breaux, along with former White House official Robert Kapla and former Republican congressional aide Bret Boyles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The team from Squire Patton Boggs joins a small army of lobbyists employed by Turkey. They include former Democratic lawmakers Dick Gephardt and Al Wynn; former Republican Senator Tim Hutchinson; retired Central Intelligence Agency Director <a title=\"Former CIA Director Porter Goss Registers to Lobby for Turkey\" href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2015\/05\/08\/former-cia-director-porter-goss-registers-lobby-turkey\/\" target=\"_blank\">Porter Goss<\/a>; former Democratic aide Brian Fornil; the law firm Greenberg Traurig; and Goldin Solutions, a media strategy firm.
