Freed from Custody, Saakashvili Pledges \u2018to Put an End\u2019 to Georgian, Ukrainian Oligarchs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>CIVIL GEORGIA<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ukrainian Security Service Detains Mikheil Saakashvili<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili was detained by the Ukrainian Security Service.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Saakashvili, who leads the Movement of New Forces party in Ukraine, was apprehended in his flat in Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Davit Sakvarelidze, one of ex-President\u2019s close associates, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/davit.sakvarelidze\/posts\/10155059142110233\">wrote<\/a> in his Facebook post early morning today that security officers were trying to break into Saakashvili\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Live video footages from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ivan.slobodianyk.9\/videos\/1663976426958046\/\">scene<\/a> showed heavy police presence in and around the building, with Saakashvili <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SaakashviliMikheil\/videos\/1770944946269212\/\">addressing<\/a> his supporters from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HelpArmy.in.ua\/videos\/vb.100008250640127\/2039858572965811\/?type=2&amp;theater\">rooftop<\/a> and calling on them to mobilize outside the building. Later footages, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SaakashviliMikheil\/videos\/1770959072934466\/\">showed<\/a> him forced downstairs and pushed into a police van.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Activists who gathered outside the building <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SaakashviliMikheil\/videos\/1770970902933283\/\">blocked<\/a> the road and confronted the security officers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The police van with Saakashvili inside is presently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SaakashviliMikheil\/?hc_ref=ARSMxoym3Iar56dW2bP1r8kpRUinEl8Buy3Jc2jXO4Y8mTnU2Z3hci9_0uTuUuW3S7E\">surrounded<\/a> by security officers and blocked by his supporters.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Freed from Custody, Saakashvili Pledges \u2018to Put an End\u2019 to Georgian, Ukrainian Oligarchs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who was detained by the Ukrainian Security Service earlier today, was released from temporary custody by his supporters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Saakashvili, who leads the Movement of New Forces party in Ukraine, was <a href=\"http:\/\/civil.ge\/eng\/article.php?id=30697\">apprehended<\/a> in his flat in Kyiv early morning on December 5 on charges of assisting criminal groups and covering up their activities, but ex-President\u2019s activists who gathered outside the building surrounded the police minivan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SaakashviliMikheil\/videos\/1770970902933283\/\">hindered<\/a> it from moving forward.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SaakashviliMikheil\/videos\/1771000756263631\/\">confrontation<\/a> between the activists and the security service officers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SaakashviliMikheil\/videos\/1771114026252304\/\">continued<\/a> for almost four hours, with Saakashvili\u2019s supporters overwhelming the resistance and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gala_cha\/status\/938039264834674688\">forcefully releasing<\/a> him from detention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Escorted by his supporters, Saakashvili then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SaakashviliMikheil\/videos\/1771225642907809\/\">walked<\/a> to the Ukrainian Rada, where he addressed an impromptu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/UNIAN.net\/videos\/1636015666460152\/\">rally<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The former President <a href=\"http:\/\/rustavi2.ge\/ka\/news\/91444\">spoke<\/a> to the Tbilisi-based Rustavi 2 TV before the rally, thanking his family and supporters and pledging to put an end to \u201call oligarchs, all robbers and oppressors of the people both in Ukraine and Georgia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThese losers do not know who they are dealing with, I was born for victory together with the Georgian and the Ukrainian peoples. Look at how the Ukrainians supported me [today], look at their unimaginable heroism: they have confronted the national guard of Ukraine unarmed, the President\u2019s personal guard, which detained me together with the security service,\u201d Saakashvili noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his remarks for the press, Saakashvili <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SaakashviliMikheil\/videos\/1771359446227762\/\">urged<\/a> the residents of Kyiv to gather at the Ukrainian Rada and demand the resignation of the General prosecutor and the Security Service leadership. He also called for launching procedures for impeaching President Petro Poroshenko and his team.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cEither we unite now and peacefully avoid the revolution, through the Parliament, as it happened in 2004, when the Parliament made several important decisions\u2026 either we gather and force them to leave in peaceful manner, or they will separately crush us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Saakashvili also spoke on charges brought against him, saying the accusations were \u201cfake\u201d in order to \u201cget rid of a loud voice that is challenging\u201d the authorities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Ukrainian Security Service, Mikheil Saakashvili was <a href=\"https:\/\/ssu.gov.ua\/en\/news\/1\/category\/2\/view\/4196#.aOMlhyMr.dpbs\">detained and charged<\/a> under Article 256 \u00a7 1 of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislationline.org\/documents\/action\/popup\/id\/16257\/preview\">Criminal Code of Ukraine<\/a> \u2013 assistance to members of criminal organizations and covering up of their criminal activity, which is punishable by imprisonment for a term of three to five years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>In Quotes: Georgian Politicians on Mikheil Saakashvili\u2019s Detention<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Below is a compilation of some of the reactions from Georgian politicians on the <a href=\"http:\/\/civil.ge\/eng\/article.php?id=30697\">detention<\/a> of ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili in Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MargvelashviliG\/status\/938002348319936513\"><strong>Giorgi Margvelashvili, President of Georgia:<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n\u201cThe ongoing processes in Kyiv are the internal affairs of Ukraine; at the same time, in the center of the events is the former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, whose security we hope will be ensured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rustavi2.ge\/ka\/news\/91430\"><strong>Irakli Kobakhidze, Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia:<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n\u201cThis [specific] case will be addressed by relevant agencies, the Georgian side will, naturally, also be involved in addressing this issue.
