On 16 June, an Ankara court <a title=\"Court's gag order on hostages in Iraq deemed as censorship\" href=\"https:\/\/www.todayszaman.com\/news-350562-court-imposes-gag-order-on-coverage-of-turkish-hostages.html\" target=\"_blank\">banned<\/a> all Turkish media, including online media, from mentioning the abduction of 80 Turkish citizens in northern Iraq by the Jihadi militant group Islamic State in Syria and the Levant (ISIS).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_338\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-338\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/covcasbulletin-info.hhd.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Covcas-Turkey-bans-Iraq-hostages-names1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-338\" src=\"https:\/\/covcasbulletin-info.hhd.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Covcas-Turkey-bans-Iraq-hostages-names1-300x104.jpg\" alt=\"Photo : AFP photo \/ HO \/ Welayat Salahuddin\" width=\"300\" height=\"104\" srcset=\"https:\/\/covcasbulletin.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Covcas-Turkey-bans-Iraq-hostages-names1-300x104.jpg 300w, https:\/\/covcasbulletin.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Covcas-Turkey-bans-Iraq-hostages-names1.jpg 629w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-338\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo : AFP photo \/ HO \/ Welayat Salahuddin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The government\u2019s management of this crisis had been much criticized in recent days. Issued at the request of the Ankara prosecutor\u2019s office, the <a title=\"Ankara 9. A\u011f\u0131r Ceza Mahkemesinin Yay\u0131n Yasa\u011f\u0131 Karar\u0131\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rtuk.org.tr\/sayfalar\/IcerikGoster.aspx?icerik_id=f1a02d0f-e37e-4241-b6fa-938c46189e43\" target=\"_blank\">court order<\/a>\u2019s official aim is to ensure \u201cthe safety of Turkish citizens kidnapped by the terrorist organization and taken to an unknown place.\u201d Failure to comply could lead to media being fined or suspended by the Radio and TV High Council (RT\u00dcK).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis blatant act of censorship violates the Turkish public\u2019s right to be informed about a subject of general interest,\u201d said Johann Bihr, the head of the Reporters Without Borders Eastern Europe and Central Asia desk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cEven if the government is rightly concerned for the safety of the hostages, its policies in Syria are the <a title=\"Busy agenda awaits Parliament this week\" href=\"https:\/\/www.todayszaman.com\/news-350544-busy-agenda-awaits-parliament-this-week.html\" target=\"_blank\">subject of public debate<\/a>. Trying to supress criticism instead of facing up to its responsibilities is unacceptable. We call on the courts to immediately lift this ban, which is out of all proportion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When ISIS fighters <a title=\"First media victims of ISIS offensive\" href=\"http:\/\/en.rsf.org\/iraq-first-media-victims-of-isis-17-06-2014,46455.html\" target=\"_blank\">seized control of Mosu<\/a>l, in northern Iraq, on 11 June, they abducted 49 Turkish citizens from the Turkish consulate, including the consul, his wife and their children. A total of 31 Turkish truck drivers were taken hostage the next day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Turkish authorities, especially the defence ministry and the National Intelligence Organization (MIT), have been fiercely criticized by the opposition, which has accused them of <a title=\"Turkey says got prior warning of Mosul consulate attack\" href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/turkey-says-got-prior-warning-mosul-consulate-attack-153130178.html\" target=\"_blank\">ignoring warnings<\/a> and failing to evacuate the Mosul consulate in time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two days before the Ankara court issued the ban, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan denounced the media critics and called on the media to \u201cfollow the [negotiations with ISIS] without agitating, without writing or saying too much, because agitation does not work in our favour, it works against us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Mosul abductions have also revived the debate about the government\u2019s policies in Syria and its alleged support for some of the anti-Assad factions \u2013 a sensitive issue that has given rise to similar censorship orders in recent months.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In February, a court <a title=\"How far will censorship go as political crisis deepens?\" href=\"http:\/\/en.rsf.org\/turkey-how-far-will-censorship-go-as-17-02-2014,45875.html\" target=\"_blank\">banned<\/a> any reporting about alleged arms convoys bound for Syria that may have been organized by Turkish intelligence.
