While he did not mention a name, it was the clear the woman in question was Amberin Zaman, a journalist for The Economist and Taraf. Erdogan\u2019s tirade came during a campaign rally last Thursday in the city of Malatya, ahead of Sunday\u2019s presidential vote. Zaman had expressed opinions critical of Erdogan <a title=\"Critics of Erdogan become victims of smear campaigns  Read more: http:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/pulse\/originals\/2014\/08\/tremblay-erdogan-insulting-amberin-zaman-press-freedom-akp.html##ixzz3AT5g8Aiy\" href=\"www.al-monitor.com\/pulse\/originals\/2014\/08\/tremblay-erdogan-insulting-amberin-zaman-press-freedom-akp.html#\" target=\"_blank\">during a TV discussion<\/a> the night before.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Erdogan continues during a rally in Ankara on Saturday, calling her a \u201c<a title=\"Critical journalist Baransu detained and released on eve of election\" href=\"http:\/\/www.todayszaman.com\/anasayfa_critical-journalist-baransu-detained-and-released-on-eve-of-election_355203.html\" target=\"_blank\">despicable woman<\/a>\u201d and saying she had insulted Islam. She has also been targeted online by Erdogan supporters, in what the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has labelled a \u201c<a title=\"Intimidation of Turkish journalist by political leadership threatens media freedom and journalists' safety, says OSCE media freedom representative\" href=\"http:\/\/www.osce.org\/fom\/122480\" target=\"_blank\">widespread smear campaign<\/a>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe pro-Erdogan camp emboldened by his very public insults against me continue to mob lynch me via the social media,\u201d Zaman told Index on Censorship. \u201cMy twitter feed is flooded with threats and profanities. She was <a title=\"Turkish PM tells female reporter to 'know your place'\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/europe\/turkey\/11022632\/Turkish-PM-tells-female-reporter-to-know-your-place.html\" target=\"_blank\">fired last year from Haberturk<\/a> over articles critical of the government, and she was also one of the journalists <a title=\"Hacks, hacking and propaganda: what\u2019s happening to Turkey\u2019s journalists?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/2013\/11\/hacks-hacking-propaganda-whats-happening-turkeys-journalists\/\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly wiretapped<\/a> with the approval of Erdogan. As she said at a recent Index event on digital freedom, she is <a title=\"Recap report: Beating retreat- Digital freedom in Turkey, Russia and Azerbaijan \" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/2014\/06\/recap-report-beating-retreat-digital-freedom-turkey-russia-azerbaijan\/\" target=\"_blank\">attacked online daily<\/a> by pro-government trolls.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But Zaman is not the only member of Turkish media under threat. According to recent figures there are <a title=\"2013 prison census: 211 journalists jailed worldwide\" href=\"http:\/\/cpj.org\/imprisoned\/2013.php\" target=\"_blank\">40 journalists behind bars<\/a> in the country, making it one of the world\u2019s worst jailers of press. Since 1992, <a title=\"Turkey Ten journalists to free from prison \" href=\"http:\/\/cpj.org\/europe\/turkey\/\" target=\"_blank\">14 journalists<\/a> have been murdered with impunity. Turkey stands at 154th out of 180 countries in the latest <a title=\"Biggest rises and falls in the 2014 World Press Freedom Index\" href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/index2014\/en-index2014.php\" target=\"_blank\">Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index<\/a>, and its ranking has deteriorating over the past years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition to Zaman\u2019s case, there have been a number of other attacks on press freedom just over the past few days, as reported by the <a title=\"Media mapping tool\" href=\"http:\/\/mediafreedom.ushahidi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Index media mapping tool<\/a> among others. Enis Berberoglu, editor-in-chief of Hurriyet, <a title=\"Turkey: Editor of H\u00fcrriyet resigns after prime minister's criticism\" href=\"http:\/\/mediafreedom.ushahidi.com\/reports\/view\/260\" target=\"_blank\">resigned on 8 August<\/a>. The paper has denied that it was as a result of political pressure. However, in his attacks on Zaman during the Malatya rally, Erdogan <a title=\"Know your place you shameless woman, Erdo\u011fan tells journalist\" href=\"http:\/\/www.todayszaman.com\/newsDetail.action?newsId=354923\" target=\"_blank\">specifically mentioned<\/a> owners of the TV channel she was on, Dogan Holding. Hurriyet is also owned by Dogan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe consensus is that he was pushed out but his departure coincided with the elections so it didn\u2019t get the attention it deserved. But it is a further sign that media bosses will continue to cave in to power. It\u2019s a tragic comment on the state of the Turkish media,\u201d says Zaman.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The same day as Berberoglu\u2019s resignation, investigative journalist Mehmet Baransu <a title=\"Turkey: Journalist beaten and detained on defamation charges\" href=\"http:\/\/mediafreedom.ushahidi.com\/reports\/view\/261\" target=\"_blank\">was beaten by police<\/a>. The day after he was detained for tweeting about the incident, and about the Istanbul public prosecutor. There has also been reports that the Cihan news agency was <a title=\"Turkey: Cihan news agency's election coverage limited by police\" href=\"http:\/\/mediafreedom.ushahidi.com\/reports\/view\/263\" target=\"_blank\">restricted from covering the presidential election<\/a>, with police ordered to keep journalists out of polling sites across the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The election also <a title=\"Turkey: Presidential election shines spotlight on free speech challenges \" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/2014\/08\/turkey-presidential-election-press-freedom-freeom-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\">put the spotlight on<\/a> issues surrounding biased media coverage in favour of Erdogan; something that was <a title=\"Presidential candidates in Turkey able to campaign freely, but playing field not level, say international observers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.osce.org\/odihr\/elections\/turkey\/122539\" target=\"_blank\">highlighted by observers<\/a> after the vote. Zaman says it is difficult to measure the impact of the poor state of media freedom on the election and its outcome \u2014 Erdogan <a title=\"Recep Tayyip Erdogan wins Turkish presidential election\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-28729234\" target=\"_blank\">won comfortably<\/a> after one round. But it was not, she says, \u201ca level playing field\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cErdogan has indirect control over a broad swathe of media outlets, most crucially of television. So the opposition candidates received scant coverage, and the little they got in pro-government was more of a smear campaign to which they were unable to effectively respond. Intimidation of the media and of media bosses has created an environment of self-censorship where journalists fear losing their jobs,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cEven the mildest criticism is no longer tolerated. It\u2019s stifling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite the attacks from Erdogan and his supporters, Zaman says she is \u201cvery heartened by the thousands of messages of support I have received, including from pious Muslims\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Women\u2019s Equality Monitoring Group, whose membership includes female journalists, academics and writers has <a title=\"Women writers call on Erdo\u011fan to apologize to journalist\" href=\"http:\/\/www.todayszaman.com\/national_women-writers-call-on-erdogan-to-apologize-to-journalist_355361.html\" target=\"_blank\">called on Erdogan to apologise<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMaking a female journalist a target by calling her shameless for simply performing her job was the last link in a chain of sexist stances,\u201d they said. \u201cThis attack was also an attempt to silence the few remaining critical voices in the media, which has been silenced with bribery, censorship and self-censorship.\u201d The Economist have stated that they \u201cstand firmly\u201d by Zaman.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI am not alone,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But as Erdogan has indicated intention to expand the powers of the presidency, Zaman is not optimistic about the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cShould he continue to run the government as he announced he would it is horrible news for journalists.
