Turkey Ranks First in Violation of Freedom of Expression before ECtHR

European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has announced its statistics for the year 2015. Russia has ranked first being 109 times convicted due to human rights violations followed by Turkey on the second rank with 79 convictions and Romania with 72.

According to the data the highest proportion of the decisions issued by ECtHR are related to the violation of the right to liberty and safety. The most complaints in this category have been made against Russia with 58 applications followed by Ukraine with 32 and Turkey with 14 applications.

The most complaints have been made regarding the violation of the right to liberty and safety with 181 applications followed by inhuman and degrading treatment with 157 applications and the right to a fair trial with 130 applications.

Turkey has been the country which got the most complaints in the category of violation of the freedom of expression with 10 applications out of 28 in total.

Turkey convicted 79 times in 2015

The court has adjudicated on the complaints brought against Turkey with three judgements finding no violations and with 79 judgements finding at least one violation.

In 2015 Turkey has ranked the third country with the highest number of cases brought to trial before ECtHR. According to the statistics Ukraine is on the first rank with 13,850 cases followed by Russia with 9,200 cases and Turkey with 8,450 cases. (EA/DG)
