European Court of Human Rights Ruled on the Case of Imprisoned REAL Leader Ilgar Mammadov

STRASBURG. May 22, 2014: Today, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled on the case of the Ilgar Mamedov, leader of the Azerbaijani opposition movement REAL.

According to the verdict of ECHR, the courts in Azerbaijan have violated Ilgar Mammadov’s rights to liberty (Article 5.1 and 5.4 of the European Convention on Human Rights), right to presumption of innocence (Article 6.02) , and his right not to suffer from unjustified restriction of freedom (Article 5-18). THE ECHR verdict directed the Azerbaijani government to pay 22,000 Euro to Ilgar Mammadov in compensation of suffering these violations.

Ilgar Mammadov was arrested and sentenced by the Court of Grave Crimes to 7 years iin jail based on what was widely belived in Azerbaijan and internationally, as fabricated charges of organizing mass riots in Ismayilli on 23-24 January 2013 (Azeri Report).
